Until the mid 1990's I was perpetually broke - scraping by from paycheck to paycheck
- sometimes borrowing from friends just to eat! I was lonely most of the
time, (or rejected by women on a regular basis), and frequently doing jobs
I hated. I was miserable, depressed, and feeling decidedly un-sexy too!
To understand why, I should explain a little about my beginnings ...
Imagine a nine year old middle class English boy in the 1960s. The world was
simpler then.
Until now his childhood has been happy, but all that is about to change, because
in the early hours of this February morning, cancer will claim his
mother's
life.
The boy, of course, was me.
The next four years were hell. My father re-married. My stepmother
hated me and was emotionally very cruel. On one occasion she gave away
my pet cat while I was at school. She left our lives when I was
thirteen.
All I wanted was to be happy again.
I began reading all the books I could get my hands on that I thought might contain
some part of an answer to my simple boy's quest:
There has to be a way to be happy & successful even though life can be cruel...
Aged just 20, I took up a career in psychiatry.
As I read, watched and studied human beings, I made an astonishing
discovery: No one seemed happy!
Why be unhappy when you can be, do or have anything
you want?
I just couldn't understand it. And then I met a very wise man.
Peter was a doctor, but he was no ordinary man. He was nearing retirement, and
he seemed to ooze wisdom. He had a twinkle in his eye that you'd want Santa
to have, but somehow his was permanent.
This man was always happy. I determined to get to know him & discover his secrets.
All around me, couples were divorcing or splitting up.
Children were being bullied or abused or terrified that they were in some
way responsible for their parents' breaking up.
Almost no one was happy with their looks.
Nearly everyone hated their job, and practically everyone
had given up on their childhood dreams by their mid twenties at the latest!
They relied on, (at least), alcohol, tobacco and too much food and
sex to give them relief from what they all seemed to experience as a stressful existence!
Misery was everywhere. And most people, (by that age), had not suffered
a personal tragedy or emotional abuse during their early life.
As I watched Peter work, people changed before
my very eyes!

I love to write, and I had a few articles published in national magazines
in the early eighties around the topics I was exploring. The fact that the
editors accepted my writing told me that not only was I onto something, but
that clearly other people wanted to read what I was writing about.

My well-meaning friends would tell me, of course, that personal happiness
was not really what life was about. It was just a stroke of luck if you got
bits
of that,
so
better
be
grateful
for the good times because they won't last!
And of course, I had only to read a newspaper, watch a soap opera or any drama to
see that human misery was the most common of conditions. Most people, it
seemed, simply put up with it!
But the feeling that it was totally unnecessary wouldn't leave me.

I pursued my beliefs and my dreams. I left well paid jobs because
I knew I would not be happy in them. I took risks that I was told by well
meaning friends and family were foolish.
I managed money in a way that I was told was risky. I'd spend and
live for today rather than save for the rainy tomorrows.
Wealth And Happiness Are Your Birthright!
I am now in my early fifties. Somewhere, some time about eight or
ten years ago, it dawned on me that I had done it. This doesn't mean I've "finished". I'll never stop learning or growing. But nowadays it is always from a place
of joy in my heart and a spring in my step for the wonderful life I have.
I have my down days, of course, but they are rare events and I know
how to pull myself out of them very quickly now.

certainly is not! I was "fortunate" enough to be given a start in life where I had to figure out how to put happiness
together. Apparently, I seem to be better at it than many people who never
had to "fight" for it.
